The headlines read “BlackBerry accuses Snapchat of using its patented messaging technology”, and “BlackBerry sues Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram over messaging patents”.

It seems BlackBerry new business model it to sue and get settlements from companies that have been using very widely known technology for years. The company has also successfully sued Cisco Systems Inc., phone maker BLU Products and communications tech firm Avaya Holdings Corp and secured settlements from them.

BlackBerry filed their Facebook lawsuit on March 6, 2018, claiming the company unlawful use of BlackBerry’s intellectual property including the use of notifications, count of unread messages, and other ubiquitous messaging features. In a statement authored by Facebook Deputy General Counsel Paul Grewal and given to Cheddar, the social networking company responded, “Blackberry’s suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business. Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, Blackberry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight.”

BlackBerry filed their Snap Inc. lawsuit on April 3, 2018, also claiming the company is infringing on six of its patents, two of which mirror the suit filed against Facebook. Including in the filling documents Blackberry is suing for the use of Snap Maps and methods for integrating advertising on mobile devices.
